All DJH Model Loco kits are designed with an extreme attention to detail and built to the scale of the original model. Our Research and Development team examine archived drawings to gain access to the most intricate details of the original model and replicate this in the model designs – even down to the number of rivets used!

The J72 (E1) Class locomotives were first built by the ‘North Eastern Railway’ in 1898, by Wilson Worsdell at Darlington works, and were a development of the J71 Class built in 1886, by T.W. Worsdell. 75 locomotives were built under NER, 10 by LNER in 1925 – after the grouping – and a further 28 after nationalisation in 1948. Between 1937 and 1954, eight of the first class of engines had vacuum ejectors fitted and steam heating equipment. The J72’s were very successful in service, and well liked by the engine crews. Most of the class lasted until the end of steam operations by ‘British Railways’.
The model represents one of the first twenty members of this long-lived class and can be built with the original short bunker and subsequently modified with plates behind the coal rails, sandwich-type front buffer beam and Ross-pop safety valves. Containing all the fine detail with which Piercy locomotive models are associated, this kit consists of turned boiler, cast white-metal smokebox, tank sides, cab, footplate, etched chassis, valve gear and various lost wax castings.
